Benefits of Walk & Talk Therapy
Pair movement with meaningful conversation to support your mind, body, and overall well-being.
Did you know I offer walk and talk therapy in and around Brick, New Jersey?
It’s true!
While I see most of my clients via telehealth, a few have opted to try out walk and talk therapy and have offered positive feedback about it.
Walking is a simple way to improve health. This article from Mayo Clinic shares various benefits of walking, including improved cardiovascular health, improved mood and memory, and muscle endurance.
So why not try pairing physical and mental health together? Some reasons people enjoy walk and talk therapy:
Eye contact. Some people struggle to make eye contact while discussing difficult or traumatic topics. Eye contact can feel too confrontation, and therefore distract from saying what you need to say. Walking side-by-side can feel more comfortable for many people. In this article from Psychology Today, a clinician describes clients who feel more free and less anxious in open spaces, rather than confined to an office space.
Busy schedules. Plenty of people struggle to fit exercise into their schedule. Walk and talk therapy allows you to multitask, in a simple way.
Mental flexibility. There is a reason that people use movement to get “unstuck”. Our bodies can reflect what is going on in our minds, and a stuck mindset or thinking pattern can cause our bodies to remain rigid. Walking helps the body get un-stuck and can have a similar effect on the mind. The invigorating effects of sunshine, fresh air, and little bit of exercise can foster creativity and help a client be more receptive to new ways of thinking.
